This week I was convicted about something during our Sunday service and wanted to share that because it was such a true statement and something I often forget. The sermon was on Joseph, we are going through OT characters and looking at how they foreshadow the coming Christ and His attributes, and also how they differ.

Joseph was someone who was very un-justly treated throughout his life and yet he understood what it meant to follow Christ. My heart was convicted by the statement about sin orientation…horizontal or vertical…mine is all too often horizontal…let me explain:

Horizontal Sin Orientation = Anytime you think “well, they sort of deserve what they got so I’m not too worried about this minor sin against them, they had it coming”. Or “my wife doesn’t treat me the way I deserve so why should I go above and beyond for her, I already do enough”, etc

Vertical Sin Orientation = Instead you think “God has told me to be truthful and act righteously so even though they may deserve this, I’m not going to do it”. Or “my wife may not ‘deserve’ this by a worldly standard but God has called me to be a better husband to her and she ‘deserves’ it by His”.

The idea is that instead of basing your sin or lazyness on what you think others may or may not deserve, you base your actions and decisions on what God has called you to. In the story of Joseph we see a fork in the road regarding Podipher’s wife…

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”

Genesis 39: 8 But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

Notice that Joseph gets it right, he understands that if he were to sin in this way it would more importantly be a issue between him and God. He doesn’t look horizontally at his situation and how he doesn’t deserve to be a slave, how he may never actually have a wife and how he works really hard and sort of by a worldly horizontal standard deserves something…he looks at vertically at God.

It doesn’t matter what unjustice you are experiencing, it doesn’t matter how badly your spouse treats you, your friends treat you when it comes to a decision to sin against them. You will deal with God and sin is sin.

Be encouraged today to pray for a vertical orientation or sin when it comes to how you treat others. I know I need to change some of how I act, and especially those times where I don’t do something extra because “they don’t deserve it”…what about the fact that I don’t deserve anything other than Death but yet Christ holds that back only by His mercy…get your sin calibrated by the Bible…get it vertical!
